A hiker who got lost
in the mountains overnight survived the chilly night with only minor scratches.
Braxton Bradhman, from
Asheville is an experienced hiker, but says even he made a couple mistakes that
people can learn from. The 25 year old went
hiking with some friends off the Blue Ridge Parkway Sunday. Some headed into
the mountains to go camping.
Bradham says he was
interested in finding a cave a friend had told him about. He says it's at that
point he made a mistake and got lost.
“Yeah...stay with your
group. I got impatient and I was already a little bit up the mountain
from them. I didn't want to go down and them back up and decided to cut
off them all....and mistake number one.”
Bradham says he
couldn't find his friends' campsite so he made camp himself sleeping under the
stars and chilly weather he says dipped into the 40's. He started a fire, and
even did some sit ups and push-ups to stay warm. Early Monday morning he took
off again, and by afternoon made his way to a forest service road off Caney Fork
Road in Jackson County. He figures he hiked 13 miles before two forest service
workers picked him up.
Bradham says he didn't have a cell phone. The next time he goes hiking, he says he'll
make sure he brings one, or a walkie-talkie.
