A state investigation is under way into allegations a 14
year old girl was raped in the aftermath of a Halloween party. According to a Jackson
County search warrant, the young girl reported she and many others underage
drank alcohol at a party at Dillard Excavating in Sylva last weekend. She says
she was raped after leaving the party. Neighbors say they're shocked.
“I've lived in the community 40 years and I knew the
people that owned the building and everything. I can't believe it,” says Stan
The allegations were
reported to a School Resource Officer Monday at Smoky Mountain High School.
“Our School Resource Officer immediately started the ball
rolling. Again I was notified immediately as soon as we had concerns for a
student,” says Superintendent Mike Murray.
Murray says the sheriff's office was
contacted quickly. The sheriff’s office says state Alcohol Law Enforcement is
investigating since a sheriff’s office employee might have been involved with
The search warrant indicates
the 14 year old told a detective she and other underage high school students
had been drinking Jello shots and other alcohol.
An anonymous letter to the media and law enforcement claims adults at the party condoned
immoral behavior including those associated with the sheriff’s office.
The letter also says marijuana and sexual activity were
present and encouraged and promoted. And
it says three of the adults present work for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

agents say the investigation is ongoing, and as of Friday, no charges had been

with theirs. But there will be consequences for students with our school if
they're convicted or charged with things,” says Superintendent Murray.
Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Yopp responded to the party Saturday night. According
to a dispatch report, after checking out the scene described by a 911 caller as,
"A lot of vehicles coming and going…and they're speeding and
reckless," a dispatcher put in her notes "10-4. They're having a Halloween
