Bruce Brown, Bruce's Fabulous Foods
Bruce and Barbara Brown left the frozen, Siberian confines of Elyria, Ohio in September of 1993, moving to their new home of Marion, NC to be closer to her parents, who resided in Old Fort.
They are the co-owners of Bruce's Fabulous Foods, which originally opened on Sept. 21st, 2001 (yes, that is correct .... ten days AFTER 9/11). Before that, Bruce was the dining room and catering manager at Josephine's while Barbara Jean worked for local businesses like Community Bank, Tate's Insurance and Steve Little's law office.
Once they arrived in McDowell County, they became very involved with Foothills Community Theater and remain active participants to this day in various productions. They currently make their church home at Glenwood Baptist Church.
Barbara is currently serving on the CAPP Program Board of Directors for DSS, the McDowell County Tourism Board of Directors and The Marion Business Association Board.
Bruce has served multiple terms on the United Way Board of Directors, Marion Business Association Board and McDowell County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Together, they have supported numerous local charities and events, from heating gallons and gallons of spaghetti sauce for the Hospice of McDowell County Spaghetti Dinner to being one of the originators of "Soup In a Bowl" fund-raiser for MACA, Relay For Life and donating numerous gift certificates for local fund-raising auctions for charities and schools. Bruce has also participated in many educational events for the McDowell County Schools, such as leading cooking classes on E3 Day and various Career Days across the county. Every year, we roast, bun and wrap 1200+ hot dogs for the Marion Police Dept. for the "National Night Out" Festivities, distributing all the hotdogs in addition to condiments, chips and drinks. Bruce's Fabulous Foods is also one of the original participants in "Eat Out for Early Education" for the McDowell Partnership for Children, a fund raiser that donates ten percent of a day's receipts for the benefit of children in McDowell County.
Bruce and Barbara were named "Main Street Champions" of McDowell County in 2012 for their work to improve our downtown. Our restaurant, Bruce's Fabulous Foods, has been featured in Our State Magazine, WNC Magazine and Roam Magazine.
We believe that we live in a special place, one that deserves more recognition than it gets. Efforts are made continuously by Bruce and Barbara to promote the city of Marion and McDowell County as destinations for food, fun and family on Bruce's monthly appearances on News 13 This Morning on Sunday mornings, and his weekly segments on Carolina Kitchen on the afternoon news of ABC-13. Everybody should know that we reside here and do not regret a single minute that we have lived here!
You can see him on the Carolina Kitchen stage at 12:30 pm!
