News 13’s Break the Hunger Food Drive

Break the Hunger

Join News 13, Carolina Furniture Concepts and Two Men & a Truck for the first ever Break the Hunger, a food drive to ensure underprivileged kids eat during Summer Break. Bring non-perishable food items to Carolina Furniture Concepts in Arden between 4:30AM to 7PM & in Waynesville from 10AM to 7PM, Friday June 7th.

We’ll be out their collecting canned goods, formula, rice and other non-perishables! We can also take in other essential items like diapers, toothpaste & toilet paper. All the items donated will go to Children First/Communities In Schools in Buncombe County & Communities In Schools of the Great Smoky Mountains who will then distribute the food and items to children who normally get free or assisted lunch during the school year. The need is great, as one out of every four children is at risk of hunger in Buncombe County alone. Help us break the hunger for children who would otherwise be underfed during the summer months!

Help us spread the word!

Children First/Communities in Schools Buncombe County

The mission of Children First is to empower children & their families to reach their full potential through advocacy, education and services. One of the many services provided to families in Buncombe County is the Family Resource Center at Emma (FRCE). Here families can come for parenting classes, tutoring and counseling. They also have access to a clothing closet & food pantry. One small way we can help the mission is to fill that food pantry for the summer!

The second mission is achieved through Communities In Schools, which focuses on surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. It is the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization!

Communities in Schools of the Great Smoky Mountains

While CIS Buncombe County covers Asheville and the surrounding area, Communities in Schools of the Great Smoky Mountains assists students in Cherokee, Graham, Swain, Jackson, Haywood and Macon County, as well as the Qualla Boundry.

Besides Break the Hunger, you can help these organizations in other ways and they are always looking for volunteers. To find out more about them, please visit their websites, provided below.
