News 13 continues our challenge to help give back. Our morning anchors are spotlighting 3 local charities every month.

Voting is open now on our WLOS Facebook page, so you can decide which one will win $1,000 from our partners Bryan Easler Toyota.

Last week, we told you about Project We Care, a group that works with 3 non-profits to support and care for senior citizens in Henderson County. Two weeks ago, we told you about the Bair Foundation, a Christian foster care agency that provides homes to abused or neglected children.

The final charity in the running this month is Helpmate, which provides services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

Jamey Lewandowski left a volatile relationship earlier this year. Jamey was able to leave because of Helpmate.

Helpmate is a life line for victims of domestic violence. They have a 24 hour emergency hotline, shelter and court advocates. But they help in many other ways.

April Burgess-Johnson with Helpmate, says the organization helps people with their employment skills so they can be self sufficent. They also help people people build their self esteem so they can feel better and can do some emotional healing.

Lewandowski says "not only are you allowed stable housing and shelter where you are both safe, but you also have time to work on yourself."

With Helpmate's assistance, Jamey has been able to transition to stable and affordable housing and make a new life for herself.  Winning the $1,000 would help women on the waiting list.

Helpmate has a very small direct service fund for people that are fleeing their homes with those emergency financial needs. Everything from toiletries to medications fall into that fund. Small things that make a huge difference.
