News 13 continues our challenge to help give back. Our morning anchors are spotlighting 3 local charities each month. Voting opens up on our WLOS Facebook page the last Monday of this month for one of them to win $1,000 from Bryan Easler Toyota.
We start September with Inheritance of Hope. The group helps local families, who have a parent with a life-threatening illness, make memories together during a special retreat. Monica and Robert Jenkerson are among those who have witnessed the mission of this group.
Robert has a rare form of stage 4 cancer. Their family went on an all-expenses-paid trip to Disney, Universal Studios and Sea World thanks to Inheritance of Hope.
Deric Milligan from Inheritance of Hope, says he helped start this group after his late wife, Kristin, was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Inheritance of Hope takes 16 local families at a time on a retreat to amazing locations like Orlando or New York, and gives them the experience of a lifetime. The retreat includes counseling sessions for both the kids and adults.
Monica Jenkerson says, "you come home with a full toolbox to help your children and help yourself navigate this journey."
Adults are even encouraged to make a legacy video for their kids to have in the future. Inheritance of Hope handles all the details. With volunteers taking pictures and working to get the families in the front of the line on the trip.
The $1,000 prize would help another family facing a terminal illness have the trip of a lifetime.
