Last week we told you about Give to the Music. Organizers provide tuition for music lessons, tutoring and musical equipment for children who need financial assistance so they can achieve their musical dreams. This week we are spotlighting the Mountain Area Child Family Center in Buncombe county, which focuses on betterment of nearly 200 kids and low income parents.
At first glance, all the excitement coming from playing outside, may seem like any ordinary pre-school. But the outdoor socializing is only one small part of what the Mountain Area Child and Family Center has to offer.
Executive Director, Jacque Penick, says the center has "early care and education for young children birth to 5 and early head start that includes home visiting that serves about 50 children." Serving all together almost 200 kids and their families, most coming from poverty with high risk factors.
They offer many programs at several centers. One of their products is called "Rainbow in my Tummy." It introduces children to a diversity of food that's also healthy.
Parent, R.J. James, says he feels lucky his 5-year-old twins are now ready for kindergarten and that's why he hopes Mountain Area will win the $1,000. Penick says the prize would let one child stay in the program and receive the comprehensive education and services that for several months.
