In a town that has a lot of offer when it comes to tacos, one north Asheville spot is putting its own unique spin the popular dish.

Taco Temple along Charlotte Street has been serving Mexican food for more than two years, and customers have plenty of good things to say about it.

"This place is amazing, and I love the food here, and the tacos are so unique, not like anywhere else," customer Sheila Price said.

Owner John Atwater says, when it comes to tacos, Taco Temple has one secret that keeps folks coming back -- they mill their own tortilla corn.

"The idea came from never being satisfied with corn tortillas that can get from anywhere," Atwater said.

"For me, what makes a good tortilla, is good corn, and heirloom corn, not just any one," he continued. "But we import from Mexico, and then we go through a pretty complicated process."

The end result is a fresh tortilla every time you come through the door.

Atwater has been in the Mexican food business since 2004 when he opened Mamacita's in downtown Asheville. But he says his love for Mexican cuisine started in childhood.

"That was my favorite food growing up. My mom would make tacos. It was a competition between me and my father who could eat the most, and I always won," Atwater recalled.

His love for the cuisine is passed on to customers.

"We love the tacos and salsas and just the atmosphere. It's great," customer Rent Smith said.

Taco Temple is located at 132 Charlotte Street in Asheville. They're open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Click here to preview their menu.
