For this week's Neighborhood Eats, we dropped by a restaurant in Hendersonville where customers are family and home cooking is king.

Many loyal customers wrote to News 13 to say the food at Daddy D's Suber Soulfood is fantastic, but the family behind the restaurant is what makes this spot a real gem.

"My dad's name was Otis Dwight Suber, but everybody called him Daddy D," co-owner David Suber said. "And right before we opened the restaurant, he passed away."

The Suber family opened Daddy D's 12 years ago, and it's been a family affair ever since.

"I even bring some of my great-[grandkids] in here to bus tables sometimes," Doris Young said. "I have a daughter that comes all the way from Atlanta to waitress sometimes."

Young is the brains behind the southern inspired food at Daddy D's and says she's always dreamed of opening a restaurant.

"Growing up, I really loved to cook, you know," she explained. "I always watched my grandmother and aunts and my mother, and I just picked up on different things."

Those different things include southern staples like black eyed peas, mac n' cheese, potato salad, fried pork chops and what many customers consider their signature dish -- fried chicken.

"We got the best chicken this side of the Mississippi," Young's son said as he fried up a fresh batch in the kitchen.

"The main thing about the chicken and any of the meats is that we marinate them," Doris explained. "We marinate all of our meats before they're cooked."

It might be the chicken or it might be the restaurant's motto that keeps customers coming back.

"Our logo is country cooking with a soulful taste, and it's just home cooking. It's not fast food, it's just food that's cooked like your grandmom and mama cooked it," David Suber explained.

"It's just a little bit slower paced, very friendly, very attentive," customer Bernie Woody said as he ate lunch. "It's a relaxing atmosphere."

Doris and David are Henderson County natives and say they remember when 7th Avenue (where Daddy D's Suber Soulfood is located) was the place their mother would go to the laundry mat.

Daddy D's is at 411 7th Ave. in Hendersonville.
