A project that's way behind schedule has some wondering if Publix will ever come to Hendersonville.

The project, which was supposed to be completed this summer, has been plagued by delays, and now there are more.

The big problem has been that the site is in a flood plain and getting permits has been a challenge.

Meanwhile, potential shoppers are getting anxious.

"What's going on with Publix in Hendersonville? What's the holdup?" Kevin Putanko emailed Ask 13.

It's the second time this year and the third since the project was first announced that News 13 has done updates on delays. The last time we checked, construction was expected to begin some time in June. But, there's still no work being done on the property that was once Atha Plaza.

"We are still working through the permitting process but expect to begin work at the site in the next week or two," Publix spokesperson Kimberly Reynolds said. "Weather and other factors certainly can affect construction."

The city has confirmed that necessary permitting has now been obtained.

Reynolds said the revised plan is to have the store completed in mid to late 2018. So, that puts the store more than a year behind schedule.

That means Publix fans will have to wait a little while longer.
