Ask 13: What do you do with a gift certificate for a restaurant that closes?

It's always a pleasant surprise to receive a gift certificate to your favorite eatery. But what do you do with the certificate if the diner closes before you use it?

Getting stuck with a useless certificate is frustrating and, certainly, you'd want a refund, even if it was a gift.

"With the sudden closure of the Hendersonville Moose Cafe, how do I get the money back for my recently received gift certificate?" Gary Jacobs wrote Ask 13.

Moose Cafe was at 59 Highlands Square Drive, that's the Walmart plaza just off Highway 64.

Jacobs said he's called the number on the gift certificate but hasn't been able to reach anyone.

Moose Cafe opened there in 2014 and was owned by the same family that operates the Asheville and Greensboro locations. But in 2016, the family sold it to local owner Jim Laub.

The certificate is still good at the Greensboro and Asheville locations, Laub said when reached by phone. An employee at the Greensboro location also said the certificate was still good at either location.

As for a refund, we tried to contact the original owner, Will Walker, but he did not get back to us.
