Ask 13: Why is equipment being stored at I-40 intersection?

"Can you tell me what is the purpose of all the equipment stored for months in the green space at the I-40 Sweeten Creek Road intersection?" an unnamed viewer wrote to Ask 13. A busy Asheville intersection has become unsightly, according to some.

Equipment and other materials are being stored at the intersection right off of Interstate 40 at Sweeten Creek Road.

"Can you tell me what is the purpose of all the equipment stored for months in the green space at the I-40 Sweeten Creek Road intersection?" an unnamed viewer wrote to Ask 13. "This assortment of what looks like storage material has been there for many months now, and it is very unsightly."

When News 13 crews visited the site, it appeared as though the materials and equipment was used by road crews.

We contacted the Department of Transportation to find out more since the materials are being stored on a DOT right of way.

"The area mentioned is being used to stage materials and equipment for a project to paint eight bridges along Interstate 40," division construction engineer Ricky Tipton responded via email. "The work to extend the lifespan of the bridges began this spring and will last through summer."

Tipton said once the work is completed, the contractor will shape up the green space and reseed it.

Bridge-painting takes place during non-peak hours on the highway, so, the equipment has to be stored close by.

The work should be completed by the end of summer.
