Kayakers from around the world will be in Swain County this weekend for a major competition.
The International Canoe Federation Freestyle World Championships begins September 2nd. Anna Burns from the Nantahala Outdoor Center and Paddler Claire O'Hara stopped by our studios to tell us what to expect.
200 kayakers from 30 countries will compete for the title of World Champion. The event takes place September 2nd through 8th on the Nantahala River, near Bryson City.
Kayaker Bryan Kirk says it's a great spectator sport. Thousands of people will gather each day to watch the freestyle kayaking.
Kayaker Adriene Levknecht competes at the event and says it's an adrenaline rush.
The 7-day event is free, though spectators should expect to park remotely and pay a $5 per-car, per-day shuttle fee. The event begins at 6 p.m. on September 2nd.
