Veterans Day Events

Updated: Monday, November 11 2013, 10:27 AM EST
There are special services taking place across the mountains today to honor our Veterans. Veterans Day became a national holiday to say thank you to the men and women who served in the military to protect our nation's freedom.

Some programs taking place today include:

At 10:30 a.m. the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville holds its Veterans Day ceremony. It includes music, a presentation of the national colors by the Junior R.O.T.C. from Asheville, Enka, North Buncombe and Owen High Schools. It's open to the public.

At 11:00 a.m. this morning, the town of Weaverville invites the public to come out to help honor Veterans at a special ceremony. It will include the Honor Guard Presentation, music, and other events at Lake Louise.

And this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Swain County will officially celebrate the completion of its new memorial wall, honoring Veterans and the history of the country. It is in front of the county courthouse. The builders installed the final panels last week.

Today, federal offices are closed, as well as state offices, banks and the postal service.

Also, stores throughout the country will thank Veterans and Active Duty Soldiers today, with discounts. To get the deals, just show a military I.D. Here's the link to see where you can get those deals.Veterans Day Events
