Asheville doctor accepts patients, not insurance
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) —
An Asheville practice provides health care that eliminates the middleman, and patients and providers say that allows better access to affordable care.
Concerns about blood pressure, cholesterol and weight brought 56-year-old Kelly Lovejoy in for direct primary care at Ashewell Medical Group in Asheville. It's a new business model in the area without a retainer fee.
"We charge between $59 and $109 a month based on your age for unlimited and unhurried care," Dr. Carly Brown explained.
"You don't get insurance for that even with a company," Kelly added.
Dr. Brown won't even take insurance. Still, the physician said she can make house calls, if needed, because she will never have more than 500 patients and doesn't have to waste time arguing with insurance companies over patient care and reimbursements.
"I think the day I stopped taking insurance was like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders," Brown said. "I felt like I was the only one responsible for the care and wellness of my patients."
"I like the fact I can get in touch with Dr. Brown at any time if I need to if there's a problem," said patient Steve Lovejoy, Kelly's husband.
"We communicate through text and email, and they will answer an email within minutes," Kelly continued.
It's instant access to care, especially desirable for the under-insured who want to breathe a sigh of relief about healthcare.
Dr. Brown said labs, prescriptions, and imaging are provided at wholesale cost in addition to the monthly fee.
Many of her patients still have insurance in case of a catastrophic health emergency.
