Get Your Rear in Gear 5K raises money for low-cost colonoscopy help

An event that raises money to provide colonoscopies to the uninsured or the underinsured is saving lives.

The annual Get Your Rear in Gear Asheville 5K is Sunday, March 26 at Fletcher Park.

Runners pay an entry fee and raise money to combat the second-most common cause of cancer death.

Thirty-three-year-old Amanda Wheeler has a family history of the disease and took advantage of the program through Asheville Gastroenterology Associates.

"They found two polyps," Wheeler said of doctors who performed her procedure and removed the growths "I feel happy because I'm glad they're not going to become cancer."

Dr. David T. May of Ashevillle Gastroenterology Associates added, "If we had waited 'til she developed symptoms, the cure rate we know is around 40 percent. If we can catch colon cancer before someone is symptomatic, the cure rate is around 90 percent."

The race is a collaborative effort of digestive health partners.

It starts at 2 pm. To sign up, click here.
