Health Alert: 3D mammography now an option for some WNC patients

3D is better than 2D in terms of mammography for one local patient.

As News 13's Jay Siltzer explains in our Health Alert, the difference can be life saving.

New mammography technology at Park Ridge Health is the most advanced, but no less intimidating.

Shannon Ollis, patient, "it was scary; I didn't really know what to expect. I had never had a mammogram before. I came in here expecting it to be really uncomfortable and much to my surprise this machine is very bearable."

The imaging takes aboout 7 minutes. The results are in 3D rather than 2.

Imaging results show a benign tumor that must be removed from her right breast.

Shannon, "it is better to know than not know and it's better to get it taken care of if you do have something."

Because of 3D mammography problems are detected sooner and the number of false positives reduced, providing greater peace of mind for patients.

Experts say cancer detected with 3D mammography is often caught sooner and treated faster with better patient outcomes.
