Brain tumor survivor John Anthony, 81, admits he almost gave up when his oncologist confirmed he had non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"At times, I didn't feel like I wanted to go on in life," admitted the U.S. Navy retiree.

"I think when anyone hears 'cancer,' it's worst case scenario, right?" said Dr. Navin Anthony, an oncologist with Hendersonville Hematology and Oncology at Pardee. "It doesn't have to be that way."

Dr. Anthony told the Navy veteran there were options, including chemotherapy and radiation.

It wasn't easy, but John's survival is among the greatest successes of the Pardee Cancer Center which opened one year ago.

"Everything was here," explained Dr. Anthony. "We had all the support staff to get things going for him quickly."

"To be able to see them come in gloomy and depressed, (and then as treatment progresses) hope starts to come back and their joy starts to return," Oncology Certified Nurse Deana McGuinn added.

"I'm here," John smiled. "I'm really enjoying life."
