Students at a Rosman Preschool got a lesson on oral health from Flossy the Dinosaur on Friday.

It is part of Transylvania Public Health's Healthy Smiles Project, which aims to teach students about taking care of their teeth.

Participating students also get one free dental health screening a year.

The project's organizer said Friday's lesson might be the first time many of the students learn about dental health.

"ADA (American Dental Association) recommends their first dental visit by their first birthday," Project Coordinator Lori Clark said. "A lot of times they're 4, 5, or 6 years old by the time they get to the dentist."

Delta Dental gave the program a $2,800 check on Friday to help keep it funded. Some of the money goes towards providing free toothbrushes and toothpaste to the children.
