A new technology option is keeping people with minor ailments out of the ER, especially after hours. At the same time, it's preventing the spread of contagious germs this time of year.

Megan Hall had good reason to access the Mission Virtual Clinic.

"I used it because I get a lot of sinus infections, and I don't really have time to go to the doctor," Hall said.

"Mission Virtual Clinic is a way a patient can be seen and evaluated without leaving their home," explained Dr. Steve North, a frequent provider who responds to patients' ailments. "It uses an adaptive interview process through the web to determine what signs and symptoms you may have ."

"In less than 30 minutes, I got an email stating it was sinus infection, got my antibiotic and asked where I wanted my prescription sent to," Hall recalled.

North said this text-like option is especially important this time of year.

"It can help keep people away from contagious conditions and help prevent the spread of a community-acquired condition like the flu, like whopping cough, by being able to stay home," he said.

The virtual clinic is available statewide to anyone ages 2 to 65 who is reasonably healthy. The cost is $25, with or without insurance.
