Highway Patrol confirms one person has died after a wreck along Interstate 26 in Buncombe County.

It happened around 9 a.m. Thursday on I-26 westbound, near Long Shoals Road (Exit 37).

Troopers said the man driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee registered out of Tennessee died in the wreck. His name has not yet been released.

According to law enforcement, it appears the Jeep sideswiped a truck before leaving the roadway and landing in an embankment.

Fire and medical crews are assisting as Highway Patrol works to piece together exactly how the crash happened.

The incident closed the left lane of I-26 WB two miles west of Exit 37. Traffic is being directed around the crash scene on the right shoulder of the road.

This was the second deadly wreck in Buncombe County on Thursday. A wreck earlier in the morning along Rock Hill Road ejected three men from a vehicle. One man was killed when the vehicle landed on him.
