A safe found on a highway in Polk County earlier this month led authorities to several storage containers that had been broken into.

Polk County deputies recovered a Centurion safe on N.C. 9 North on Dec. 3, but they were unable to find the safe's owner.

Three days later, someone reported a suspicious vehicle and a possible larceny from storage containers on Bill Collins Road. The individual did not know if anything was missing from the containers but said they were open when they were usually locked.

The owners checked the storage containers, then notified Polk County authorities that some items were missing, including the Centurion safe. The missing items were valued at more than$13,000.

Detectives have charged five people in the case and recovered many of the items reported stolen.
