A deal just closed for Perry Lane Apartments, multifamily units that will sit on Perry Lane, just off Hendersonville Road.

The 12 acres wind back up the road and will be the location for 120 apartment units. The $17.4 million deal was financed by SunTrust Community Capital.

Developer Billy Guillet, a Western North Carolina native now based in Raleigh, is targeting residents who earn 60 percent of the area's median income.

"Our ultimate goal is to get in there and fill the need that's there in the county for affordable workforce housing," Guillet, of Mills Construction Co., said during a phone interview.

Perry Lane Apartments’ features will include state-of-the-art appliances, on-site management and amenities including a business center, computer lab, clubhouse, playground, picnic area and community rooms.

And while neighbor Michele Thomas recognizes the need for affordable housing in the area, she'd like it to be met elsewhere.

"Just not looking forward to the change it's going to make," Thomas said. "I mean, a lot of the trees are going to go down. That's the main thing. The whole atmosphere is going to be different."

Guillet said he has met with neighbors about those concerns.

"Until we get into full construction, you can't guarantee anything," Guillet said. "But we're committed to keeping as many of those existing large oak trees on the property line with a buffer to try to help with those concerns."

Guillet hopes construction will be completed in about a year and folks will be able to move on shortly after that.
