Approaching wintry weather closes area schools early

Some area schools are closing early ahead of approaching snow showers on Tuesday:


  • Buncombe County Schools: Schools dismissing one hour early.
  • Asheville City Schools: Schools dismissing one hour early.

  • Haywood County Schools: Closing 1:30 p.m.

  • Madison County Schools: Closing at 1 p.m.

  • Swain County Schools: Closing at 1 p.m.

  • Graham County Schools: Closing at 11: 30 a.m.

  • Jackson County Schools: All schools EXCEPT Smoky Mountain High School will release at 1:10 p.m. Smoky Mountain High School will release at 1:30 p.m.

  • Mitchell County Schools: Closing, starting at 1 p.m.

  • Yancey County Schools will be dismissing early today January 16, 2018 due threat of freezing rain this afternoon. Elementary schools will dismiss at 1:10pm, Middle schools at 1:15pm, and High school at 1:30pm.

Tuesday evening classes at all A-B Tech locations have been canceled in anticipation of inclement weather and icy road conditions.

Due to the threat of weather, many activities are being canceled today.

These are the ones we know right now (please realize, this list will likely change)

Rosman Middle & High School athletic events have been canceled.

The Tigers' home wrestling match against Andrews has been postponed to Thursday, Jan 18.

Tonight's tri-team wrestling match at Brevard between the Blue Devils, the Hendersonville Bearcats and the Pisgah Bears has been moved up in time and will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Tonight's Rosman at Swain County basketball games have been postponed due to winter weather approaching the area. A makeup date will be announced later.

All of today’s Cherokee County athletic events have been postponed, make-up dates will be announced as soon as possible.

All Andrews High School Athletic Events are postponed.

Nantahala vs. Robbinsville games have also been postponed; it has tentatively been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18.

Tonight's Smoky Mountains Basketball games against Franklin have been postponed and rescheduled for tomorrow (1/17).

Hospitals are also taking precaustions as winter weather makes it way across the mountains.

With recent reports of winter weather approaching Henderson County as early as Tuesday evening, officials with Pardee UNC Health Care have released the following schedule for the Cancer Center, physician practices, Urgent Care centers, and Southeastern Sports Medicine for Wednesday:

  • Pardee Cancer Center will open at 10 a.m.
  • All Pardee physician practices will open at 10 a.m.
  • Urgent Care locations (Fletcher and Hendersonville) will open at 9 a.m.
  • Southeastern Sports Medicine & Orthopedics locations (Hendersonville, Waynesville, and Fletcher and South Asheville) will follow school closing and delay notifications.

If schools are closed or experience a delay in Buncombe and/or Henderson County, then all locations, with the exception of the hospital, will open at 10 a.m. The hospital will remain open regardless of weather conditions.
