With summer fast approaching, Asheville police have some tips to keep your home safe while you're on vacation.

Of course, lock all windows and doors, and don't forget the garage.

Don't hide a key near your doors. Give someone a key to house-sit, and check up on your home.

And try to use timers on exterior lights if you can.

You can also keep your house safe by watching what you post online.

"The realistic thing is that social media is indeed social and it's not just your friends seeing it," said Christina Hallingse of the Asheville Police Department. "If you're posting photos in real-time, people obviously know you're away from your home. So it might be best to save your vacation photos for posting when you return."

Police also say don't leave your blinds closed.

Most people open them when they're home, so it could be a clue to thieves that you're away.
