A couple local witches said magic is real and the release of their new books show its effect here in Asheville.

Dixie Deerman and Steve Rasmussen signed copies of their new books Wednesday night at Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe in downtown Asheville.

The Wiccan couple is well known for its international best seller "The Goodly Spellbook: Olde Spells for Modern Problems."

But Deerman and Rasmussen are also known for their spiritual, political and environmental activism, including a well-known event just a few years ago in downtown Asheville

"One of the interesting parts we put in it is stories about actual experiences -- conducting rituals, for example the protest ritual we did around the magnolia tree back in 2008," Rasmussen, Diuvei, high priest of Coven Oldenwild, said.

Proceeds from book sales benefit the religious nonprofit Coven Oldenwild, which serves the poor, inmates and people in crisis worldwide.
