Private developers, the homeless, nonprofits and government officials gathered Friday to work on solving Asheville's affordable housing crisis.

The goal of the daylong forums at UNC Asheville was to put aside differences. Nonprofits and government officials said they can't create affordable housing in Asheville without an investment and engagement from private developers.

"It helps us come to some common understanding about the need and also some common ground to work toward a common goal," Asheville Community Development Director Heather Dillashaw said. "The private market doesn't necessarily have the same goals as the nonprofit and affordable housing developer or city government or anything like that, but there are things that we agree on."

City development officials said they must build on the connections made at Friday's sessions.
