A Waynesville mental health and substance abuse treatment center has expanded.

The number of beds in Balsam Center's crisis unit has gone from 12 to 16. The center's crisis unit and outpatient facility have also been remodeled.

Balsam center also plans to launch a 24/7 behavioral urgent care soon. Officials said the expansion will help give patients more options for treatment.

"Right now, there are so many people that need assistance, and the system can be overwhelming. This gives one-point access where you can get help, and, with you, we will determine what needs to happen," Tabitha Brafford, director of Consumer Services, said

Balsam Center officials said all mountain residents are eligible to receive care there.
