Coroner: Death of man in custody ruled a homicide, investigation underway
Pickens County, S.C. (WLOS) —
In a press released, the Pickens County Coroner's office said the May death of an Easley man in police custody has been ruled a homicide.
Coroner Kandy C. Kelley says Randall Dale Scruggs, 42, was pronounced dead at Cannon Memorial Hospital on May 28, 2017.
According to the autopsy, Scruggs died from asphyxia from aspiration of gastric contents from thoracic/abdominal compression while in custody.
The Pickens County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case.
There has been no word at this time on why Scruggs was in custody.
