Several area families will receive heating assistance this winter -- thanks to Duke Energy.

The company donated more than $24,000 to the Salvation Army on Tuesday to help local families in need.

Salvation Army officials said this bitter cold winter has left more people in need than usual. The agency has already helped more than 200 families pay their electric bills.

"Duke Energy has been an incredible resource in this community, not just for us, but for many not-for-profits, by helping people in the community that need help with their electric bills just to stay warm," Maj. Dalton Cunningham, of the Buncombe County Salvation Army, said.

Anyone in need of heating assistance should call the Salvation Army and set up an appointment.
