Sheriff: Man tries to steal gas from his father, gets shot
MACON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) —
A Franklin man is recovering Monday night after authorities say his father shot him on Sunday.
Macon County Sheriff Robert Holland said 25-year-old Danny Thomas, known as D.J., is a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal record. He was supposed to make a court appearance on Monday morning for breaking and entering and larceny charges.
Sheriff Holland said things got tense at 221 Newman Road on Sunday afternoon when D.J. tried to steal gas from his father's vehicle and Danny Thomas Sr. confronted his son.
"The son then grabbed his father by the facial area and also displayed a knife according to his father. We were able to retrieve a knife at the scene," Holland told News 13.
The sheriff said the older Thomas then shot his son in the abdomen with a 9 mm pistol.
It is not the first time law-enforcement has dealt with the family.
"We are familiar with this family," Holland said. "We have dealt with the younger Mr. Thomas several times."
While DJ Thomas has a long history of breaking and entering, larceny, and property damage, Sheriff Holland would not say if drugs or alcohol were involved in this recent incident. He would only say that the investigation continues.
"We have to look at what rights an individual has to protect themselves. So, that plays a part in this, as well," the sheriff said.
D.J. remains at Mission Hospital. There's no word yet on what charges he and possibly his father could face.
