Following an incident in Hendersonville where the police department said an officer shot and killed a suspect, News 13 reached out to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) to find out what the standard procedure is following a situation like this.

Rondell Lance, president of the FOP in Asheville, explained what happens after.

"Most departments will call in the SBI, then they’ll do an internal investigation and the SBI takes it to the DA and the DA makes a judgement," Lance said, going on to say in specific instances the FBI or Department of Justice will investigate.

He said police departments don't have to ask the SBI to get involved but said it's wise to have an external investigation.

"That's one of the last things an officer wants, to be involved in is something like this," Lance said. "Unfortunately, sometimes as law enforcement we have to use deadly force."

The Hendersonville Police Department said the officer involved is on paid administrative leave.
