In its recently released "state-by-state guide to the best birds in the South," Charleston-based Garden & Gun shares its "bucket list" (get it?) for the best fried chicken in all of the South. (Photo credit: Pixabay)

In its recently released "state-by-state guide to the best birds in the South," Charleston-based Garden & Gun shares its "bucket list" (get it?) for the best fried chicken in all of the South.

Unsurprisingly, Asheville makes a good showing, with local restaurants showing up as five of the 20 N.C. restaurants that make the cut.

Editors selected the following local restaurants for their fried chicken:

  • Buxton Hall Barbecue (South Slope)
  • King Daddy's Chicken and Waffles (West Asheville)
  • Newbridge Cafe (North Asheville)
  • Rhubarb (downtown)
  • Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack (West and South Asheville)

Here's what Garden & Gun had to say about Newbridge, a small, cash-only best-kept secret on Weaverville Road:

“Wednesdays only. They serve their delicious chicken with all the right stuff: slow simmered green beans, homemade slaw, and potato salad. It’s family-reunion chicken in a place that feels like your grandma’s cluttered kitchen, if your grandma was a bluegrass music freak into memorabilia.” —Ronni Lundy
