A destructive beetle called the emerald ash borer has now spread into Haywood County.

The Forest Service says the non-native species was found 17 miles north of Waynesville.

The pest has killed millions of trees since it was first spotted in 2002.

The invasive pest, which was discovered in the Asheville city limits in early June, was spotted in Cabarrus and Mitchell counties in late June.

Signs of the bug in a tree include D-shaped holes in trunks and leaves thinning in the crowns of the trees.
