Haywood County Animal Services rescues over 100 dogs from Canton property
CANTON, N.C. (WLOS) —
HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. -- Over 100 dogs were rescued by Haywood County Animal Services from a home in Canton Saturday.
The dogs were being kept in multiple sites on about a half-acre of land on Terrace Drive.
Officials say 55 mixed small-breed dogs including chihuahuas, dachshunds and various terriers were found in a single-wide mobile home on the property.
Other larger breeds were kept in kennels, a camping trailer and on chains.
A total of 140 dogs were taken Saturday.
Officials said when they arrived the owners released the animals voluntarily.

Large-scale animal rescue underway in Haywood County
Haywood County Animal Services is currently rescuing over 100 animals kept on a property in Canton, North Carolina. The animals were being held in multiple sites on a .5 acre property.
Approximately 55 mixed small-breed dogs (chihuahuas, dachshunds, various terriers) were located in a single-wide mobile home, shared with the property owners. Larger-breed dogs (hounds, labradors) were kept in wire kennels, a camping trailer and on chains. Vaccination records were not readily available for the animals.
Animal services currently estimates the total number of animals at 107 animals.
The owners voluntarily relinquished the animals. According to animal services director, Doyle Teague, 'We are currently working with the owners to remove the animals to a temporary location where they will be evaluated.'
Local and regional animal rescue organizations are assisting the haywood county animal shelter in caring for the animals.
