A Haywood County mother seeks justice after video captures her son being beaten. She also wants to get out a message.

Charges have been filed in the case. But Linda Gillett said this case is part of continued bullying against her son, and she is coming forward in hopes other bullying victims will too.

Just who shot video of her son’s beating is unknown. But it made its way around Facebook, allegedly showing Gillett’s 17-year-old son who has ADHD, being beaten by another student at Canton's recreation park a few weeks ago.

“Kids that are mentally challenged in some way or slow or whatever, he bullies them,” she said.

“My son could easily have got killed. His voice has changed since he got choked. I want him charged as an adult because he's done it so many times,” Gillett said.

Two teens face misdemeanor assault and battery charges. Gillett said a mediation date is set for Nov. 1.

“I don't see a need for going to mediation. We want to just go before a judge and let the judge see the film and decide,” she said.

Her son is back at school now. But she is telling his story as an anti-bullying effort to encourage other victims to come forward.

“For anybody, not just for my son, because they’re bullying others, too. But they're afraid to come forward and say anything. Bullying needs to stop,” she said.

Gillett said her son is very much a loner and wouldn't fight anyone since that's not his belief system.
