A road in Swannanoa is now back open after heavy rain caused a sinkhole to form.

It happened near the 500 block of Long Branch Road in Buncombe County, in the Bee Tree community.

DOT maintenance engineer Scott Killough says crews worked from 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, through the night and into Monday morning to make repairs. The road reopened around 6 a.m. on Monday, as the News 13 morning team was live.

Killough says DOT crews replaced a drainage pipe and repaired the road so that vehicles can now pass through. He says crews will be back to repave the portion of the road.

Killough tells News 13 the DOT worked around the clock to make repairs so that emergency vehicles and fire trucks would be able to pass through the two-lane road, should there be an emergency.

Viewers submitted photos over the weekend, showing where a portion of the road was starting to collapse.

On Monday morning, there are cones and signs along the stretch of roadway where crews made repairs.
