Madison County couple charged after officials find infant confined in 'self-made' cage

Dashawn Perry wants to thank friends and strangers for reaching out and offering to make donations and extend a hand, but that's he doing fine. He's pictured here wit his 19-month-old son, Lyam, he now has custody of after his infant's mother was charged with neglect in Mars Hill for allegedly keeping their son in a makeshift cage. Perry is no longer with Lyam's mother, and had joint custody seeing Lyam on weekends, but now has temporary full custody. Haley Trantham, 23, the child's mother, and her former boyfriend Vincent Lee II, 28, are both charged with two county of neglect. Perry sent News Thirteen a photo and video of Lyam so the public could see he was doing fine and smiling like a 19-month-old should. He said social services who had his child, relayed that the makeshift cage was a crib with a mattress placed on top of it, so Lyam could not get out.

On August 2, 2017, the Madison County Sheriff's Office and the Madison County Department of Social Services responded to Ivy Ridge Apartment Drive in Mars HIll in regards to a child neglect complaint.

While searching the apartment, deputies found Lyam in the upstairs portion of the home, confined in a self-made cage. Neighbors told News Thirteen they saw police take out a crib and a mattress during the arrests Wednesday.

Deputies immediately freed the child from the cage and medical treatment was sought for the infant.

Detectives investigating the case were able to determine that the child had been being confined to the cage for 23 hours or more daily and only given minimal amounts food.

Warrants filed by the state say Trantham, Lyam's mother, failed to supervise her child and kept the him in a "self-prepared cage" for long periods of time.

Both Trantham and Vincent Lee II, 28, who was reportedly providing supervision of the child, were arrested and both charged with two counts of child abuse.

Haley was also charged with possession of marijuana. Both are currently in the Madison County Detention Facility on $20,000 secured bond.
