A supervisor kept everyone out of harm's way when a man armed with a gun entered the office Monday afternoon.

Health and human services director Jim Holland said David Jason Elliott walked into the Buncombe County Veterans Services Office about 2:45 p.m. It's unclear if Elliott pointed the gun or said anything specific once inside.

Holland said Fletcher Tove, a veteran, came out to the main area of the office, got the suspect into a cubicle and got the gun away from him.

About seven staff members, all veterans, were in the office. They evacuated immediately. Tove did not. He somehow got the gun away from the man, keeping everyone safe.

"He brandished the weapon, and, when everybody left, I don't know exactly the steps that he took after that," Holland said. "I know the next step that happened, supervisor came around and saw the weapon because he did not have possession of the weapon."

Elliot is charged with misdemeanor pointing a gun at someone.

Tove was not available for comment Tuesday afternoon.
