A Marion man is facing a felony animal cruelty charge after the body of a dog was found in the Catawba River.

Deputies with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office say Charles Travis Hollifield, 40, drowned a Chihuahua mix by putting it in a drawstring bag, along with a rock, and throwing it in the river.

On March 28, two fishermen discovered the dog named Princess inside a pink camouflage bag in the Catawba River at the Yancey Bridge.

PETA said a necropsy found the dog was alive when she was tossed into the river, where she drowned.

Deputies say Hollifield was acquainted with the dog's owner.
