Help from here in the mountains is going to another part of the world.

More than 100,000 meals were packed at Pleasant Gardens Elementary School Saturday, for hungry families in Nicaragua.

Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church organized the effort, with several hundred volunteers working in shifts.

The food was brought in from Charlotte by a group called Servants with a Heart, which will arrange for shipment to Central America.

"I think it's just great that we were able to bring the whole community together, and it looks like they're having a great time. They've got the music going, they've got teamwork, they've got competition. So, I mean it's a blessing for us to be able to participate in something like this, " said organizer Chip Cross

Pleasant Gardens Baptist used $17,000 from its mission fund to pay for the meals.
