McDowell County authorities have charged a mother-son duo with sending an illegal controlled substance to an inmate at the McDowell County Jail.

Doris Ann Cochran, 62, of Marion, is charged with conspiracy to sell and deliver a Schedule III controlled substance and providing contraband to an inmate.

Kevin Christopher Lail, 34, also of Marion, is charged with conspiracy to sell and deliver a Schedule III controlled substance.

Authorities say on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, Lail, who is incarcerated in the McDowell County Jail, received a card in the mail that jail officers found to contain Suboxone strips.

Suboxone is used in the treatment of opioid dependence but is considered an illegal controlled substance. Suboxone strips dissolve in the mouth.

Authorities say Cochran was buying the drugs and sneaking them to Lail, who was selling them to other inmates.
