Two local nonprofits with similar missions are merging.

The Asheville Design Center will now operate as a program of MountainTrue.

One of the Design Center's most notable achievements was designing a plan for the Interstate 26 Connector adopted by the DOT. The Design Center also recently helped redesign the properties in downtown Asheville known as the Pit of Despair.

Both groups hope the new partnership will help them reach beyond the boundaries of Buncombe County.

"We'll be able to start sending them a little further out in the field. So they can begin working with those communties that would typically never have access to a planner or an architect or a landscape architect," Asheville Design Center's Chris Joyell said.

"To bring in some expertise around community-based planning, helping communities envision their future and then move down the road to getting there," MountainTrue's Julie Mayfield said.
