The next step in the ongoing French Broad River development is complete and open to the public just time for Earth Day.

What's known as the French Broad River West Greenway and Craven Street improvement projects were unveiled Friday with guided tours.

It's a walking and cycling path that includes the River West pedestrian bridge below New Belgium Brewery.

"French Broad River Park, Carrier Park, Amboy Riverfront Park, we're building on that by creating a greenway that links all of those, and we're doing it in a manner that is very innovative and involves the community, building on some sustainability principles," Steph Monson Dahl, the city's riverfront redevelopment director, said.

Restoring and repairing native habitat is part of it all. The greenway will be extended over the river to the east side with a three-year timeline. The goal is to add more than five miles of greenway. Work begins later this summer.
