Victor Finegold stormed the Normandy region of France more than 73 years ago on D-Day.

Thursday night, he gave a first-hand account of the infamous World War II invasion to a group of high schoolers before they make the trip to Normandy.

The North Buncombe Blackhawk Band will be playing its instruments in honor of Finegold and others who put their lives on the line.

The band, one of about 10 nationwide to participate in the event, is raising money to march in a parade and perform in a couple events there. The Blackhawk Band plans to stay there for about a week and need help getting there.

"The kids were excited. The parents were excited. A lot of money to raise, but it's well worth it, and events like tonight with the educational component of having an actual Normandy veteran here, there's no price on that," parent Marvin Mercer said.

Finegold, an Army veteran who was on the front lines of the invasion, gave members of the band a little taste of his experience as a soldier who used his skills as a fluent French speaker.

"Somebody's got to be there, got to take the first incoming, so the guys behind don't get killed -- just the guy in front. That was my spot," Finegold said. "I'm supposed to be on point, only because if I run across somebody I could ask them, you know, things."

"I'm a lot more excited to go see and imagine what he was going through, while being there and seeing the scenery and everything," band member Rowan Bennett said.

If you're interested in helping the band make the trip, text MUSIC to 91999. Or you may make checks payable to NBBB with "Normandy" in the memo line. Those may be mailed to North Buncombe Band Boosters, ATTN: Normandy Team, P.O. Box 1175, Weaverville, NC 28787.
