Canton man in hospital after being shot by police
CANTON, N.C. (WLOS) —
A Canton man is in the hospital after an officer-involved-shooting incident Thursday.
So far there are no charges.
Canton police said two officers shot 49-year-old Marty Rogers when he pointed his rifle at them.
Officers said a woman called them Thursday night, saying she and her son argued on Boydston Street and she was afraid for her safety.
Cpl. Steven Moore and Officer Dean Henline responded to the home, where they found Rogers carrying a rifle. They instructed him to drop the firearm. When he didn't, they fired.
Neighbor Kate Brown hopes quiet returns to her neighborhood.
“I've never seen anything like this. You hear that all the time," she said. "Oh, I never thought it would happen here. But, you never know, you never know. But I hope things settle down, and we'll be OK.
“I am just sorry for the family because the mother of the victim is a friend of mine, and she's been here for a long time. I know her real well.”
The SBI is investigating the incident. Rogers is recovering at Mission Hospital. Moore and Henline are on administrative leave.
