ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A man was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting at Deaverview Apartments, on Saturday, according to Asheville Police.

According to police, a call came in about "shots fired" at Pisgah View Apartments and police got a description of a white vehicle.

The white vehicle was spotted sometime later, police said, and a chase ensued to Deaverview Apartments with four people in the white vehicle.

During the chase, a woman inside the vehicle appeared to be struggling with the driver and tried to get out of the vehicle, according to police.

Tasha Norman told News 13 that several of her family members were in the white vehicle.

"My daughter left my apartment with this man. He was driving her. This is her new baby's father. And they left my apartment and I get a call fifteen minutes ago saying that he was shot by the police," Norman said.

The suspect "ran up on a curb," police said, and then "displayed a gun" after ignoring commands from an officer and before the officer used deadly force.

The officer, police said, is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The State Bureau of Investigation was contacted, according to Asheville police, and will continue the investigation.
