The Rev. Billy Graham's earthly journey came to an end Friday in a service in which his life was celebrated by family and friends in Charlotte.

The funeral came at the end of more than a week of mourning that included crowds lining the road for a procession from Graham's home in Montreat to the Billy Graham Library Charlotte. Thousands of people, including former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, paid their respects to the late evangelist during a public viewing in Charlotte. And on Wednesday, Graham became the first private citizen since civil rights icon Rosa Parks in 2005 to lie in honor at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington.

The funeral on the library grounds Friday was an emotional service in which his final crusade paid tribute to his first -- both held under a large tent.

There was much talk about Graham's love for God, his ministry and his family.

"My father preached on heaven, told millions how to find heaven. He wrote a book on heaven, and today he is in heaven," said Graham's son Franklin, who delivered the message.

And there was a pledge to continue Graham's work here on earth.

"And I will run my race and live my life so that five minutes before I see Jesus I will have no regrets," Graham's daughter Anne Graham Lotz said.

Graham's funeral brought about 2,300 invited guests to Charlotte -- President Donald Trump and vice president Mike Pence among them.

Religious leaders of all faiths also gathered for a man who brought Christianity to millions around the world.

"He loved the Bible. It governed how he lived, and it governed how he died," the Rev. Donald Wilton said.

"Those who have heard you proclaim the gospel message and were touched, challenged and saved, I join all of them to say thank you," said the Rev. Billy Kim, Graham's interpreter in Seoul.

Graham was buried next to his wife Ruth in the prayer garden at the Billy Graham Library. About 200 of his family and close friends were there for the private ceremony Friday afternoon.

On his gravestone ... "Preacher of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ."

On Ruth Graham's gravestone is message she saw on a road sign ... . "End of construction -- Thank you for your patience."
