An application for redevelopment plans of the Sears property at the Asheville Mall have been submitted, which could bring apartments to the area.

In addition to the plans for housing, retail, restaurants and a movie theater are also in the works.

"I think it would do a lot for this area because people need entertainment. They need things to take their children to and it's just family things and I think that would add to it," said Tootie Silver of Asheville.

According to the plans, the idea is to bring a six-story, 204-unit apartment complex which would include studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments.

"Generally my thought is that size apartment development or condo development would require tremendous change in the infrastructure because the traffic's already bad on this road, so that's my only objection to it," said Beverly Battle of Black Mountain.

The movie theater would have 10 auditoriums with more than 800 seats.

There is also space for parking.

It's not clear if the Sears will be a part of the redevelopment.

A call and email to the developer were not returned.
