STEAM project lets students design the irrigation system for Vance Elementary garden

Students at one Asheville City School have a problem--so they've decided to come up with a solution.

Students designed and built an irrigation system for the school garden. Four different classrooms have come up with four different ideas on how to water the school garden.

Adian and his team explained how their irrigation system works as students presented their ideas to a panel of judges: "The water comes down here, and then it comes up here, and then it waters the plant evenly."

The judges will make the final decision by taking elements of each design for the water system that will be built.

Teachers say this STEAM project is a great way to incorporate science, technology, engineering, art and math--and of course, teamwork.

Soon, Vance Elementary School will invite parents to the campus for a workday, to build the irrigation system.

A number of community groups have contributed to the project.

Some of those include FEAST, Duke Energy, the Roots Foundation and the School of Ecology.
